My Pet Peeve: The Inappropriate Use Of The Cellphone

Certain things are irritating to everyone. These irritating actions can be caused by others and cause your lips to tighten, your eyes to roll, or make you feel incredibly irritated. You could hear noises, be annoyed by an act or simply feel something tickling you. Sometimes people don’t realize the consequences of their behaviors and acts. I hate it when people use their cellphones in places they aren’t supposed to.

Are you ever frustrated or feel insignificant when your best friend pulls out their phone and ignores you while you are together? It bothers you to hear the entire conversation on your phone from someone else in the train? Cell phones are one of today’s most beloved inventions. They also make for some of the most contentious. But, people are using them in a way that is very outlandish. Teenagers, especially adults, often disregard others and shut out the outside world while hunching over their phones. The problem isn’t the phone, but the user’s inconsiderate behavior and lack of respect. The cellphone being used during meetings is one example. It is disrespectful to use cell phone in meetings. The information on your mobile phone is more important than any conversation that takes place in the meeting. Your friends and those outside the meeting are also more important than the ones right in front. Psychologists have found that people lose up to half of their accuracy and efficiency when they switch between tasks. Processing speed is affected by how complex a task is, such as a business meeting discussion. Surveys of 3,000 adults have shown that it’s almost as inappropriate as not to bring your phone to a meeting.

Another example is driving while using a cell phone. Every day, someone is killed in car crashes because they are distracted by their cell phones. Recent research has shown that cell phones are leading causes of nearly 80% of global accidents. Research also shows that drivers are more likely to be involved in an accident if they have a cell phone. Despite the potential dangers, people still use cell phone because they want access to the internet and to stay connected with others. Some argue that cell phone use is necessary in emergency situations. I disagree strongly with that opinion as there are many companies offering emergency services without using cell phone. Onstar is one example.

Most people agree that cell phones should not be used while driving. However, there is plenty of evidence that shows they can cause serious injury and should be avoided. I’ve seen Omanians using their cellphones while driving. Mobile phones were responsible for 84% of road accidents last year. The news story about an overweight truck driver who crashed off Hamriya Flyover last year was something I recall reading. According to the ROP, “he was speeding and using his phone when the accident occurred.” The accident also killed his Bangladeshi driver.

Mobile phones have been a major innovation and invention in the 21st century. But they can be distracting and annoying. Mobile phones should not be used at any other time or place than it can harm someone.
